WHAT IS NEURO-LINGUISTIC
PROGRAMMING (NLP)
NLP was
created in the 1970s by John Grinder (a linguist) and Richard Bandler (a
computer programmer and mathematician) to provide an amazingly powerful
set of techniques for achieving consistent excellence both in personal
development and in business.
NLP was created through modeling the
language, physiology and mental processes of outstanding therapists
Fritz Perls (Gestalt therapy), Virginia Satir (Family therapy) and Dr.
Milton Erickson (world-renowned psychotherapist and hypnotherapist) and
by careful study of highly successful individuals.
The
basic premise of NLP is that the words we use reflect an inner,
subconscious perception of our problems. If these words and perceptions
are inaccurate, they will create an underlying problem as long as we
continue to use and to think them. Our attitudes are, in a sense, a
self-fulfilling prophecy.
The
reason that many multi-national companies, entrepreneurs and small
businesses are using NLP is simple. It helps us develop the ability to
perform at our best, to tap our true potential, and to be powerful
communicators by utilising the power of our minds.
NLP
gives us the skills to do this.
WHAT
IS INFLUENCING AND PERSUADING
Ability
to influence and persuade is an art that requires you to walk the path
between task achievement and process management in order to effect
change. Change is always a threat when it is done to people, but it is
embraced as an opportunity when it is done by people.
To
influence and persuade colleagues to change is a process comprising a
beginning, a middle and an end.
"Beginning"
A
series of occurrences are necessary to make an effective beginning to
the process of influence and persuasion, whether it be small/large,
lengthy/brief. These are:-
"Middle"
-
What are your
goals?
-
What values are
key to achieving your goals, business, professional, personal
values?
-
What resources do
you need to achieve your goals, skills, knowledge?
-
What needs to
change to achieve your goals?
-
What are the
risks, consequences and benefits of making the change?
"End"
-
What decisions
have you made?
-
What is your next
step?
-
What are the
further actions you need to take?
-
How will your
relationship with others be consolidated and built upon where
necessary?
Consider
current circumstances in which you are most influential:-
-
What
do you believe you are capable of?
-
What
do you believe you are not capable of?
-
What
are your dominant beliefs about 'human nature?
-
What
do you believe about the people you need to influence/persuade?
-
Does
power and status make a difference to your perceptions of others?
-
How
do you demonstrate your beliefs physiologically?
- What
do you need to change to begin to become more influential?
